With the demand for medical assistants expected to increase nearly 20% between 2020 and 2030, it’s more important than ever to have a top notch resume when applying for a medical assistant role. With an increase in demand for medical assisting positions, we can also expect to see an increase in more applicants vying for medical assisting roles.
While resumes can vary by style and content, there are several key components that a successful medical assistant resume needs.
- Name: At the top of your resume, list your full, given name. If you go by something other than your given name, such as Stevie instead of Stephanie, put your chosen name in parenthesis. For example: Stephanie (Stevie) Jones. If you have a title or certification behind your name, such as Certified Medical Assistant, you can list that here as well. See the sample resume below for an example.
- Contact Information: You want to make sure the employer is able to contact you for an interview. List your address, a professional email and phone number. In addition, if you have multiple email accounts, make sure you check the one included on your resume regularly. You don’t want to miss an interview request.
- Career Objective Statement: A career objective statement consists of 2-3 sentences that gives an overview of who you are and what you’re looking for in a new position. Career objective statements are important because it’s your first chance to make an impression on a recruiter or hiring manager. Be sure to use buzz words and quantitative values in your objective statement such as the number of years you’ve been in the field and skills that are necessary for the role you’re applying for.
- Experience: Keep your experience brief and highlight what is or was most important in each position. Use action verbs and quantitative values to draw attention. In addition, be sure to include any honors or awards you received in any past role. If you have received multiple awards, you can always create an awards section of your resume as well.
- Education: List which degree or certificate you received, the educational institution you attended and the years you were enrolled in the program.
- Skills: List the most important skills you possess that would make you a good candidate for the position. You can list both hard and soft skills needed to be successful in the position. Be sure to include any software or medical procedures that you are proficient in.
- Certifications: Include any certifications that you have received that may be required and will help you be successful in your role.
- Languages: If you speak a second language, be sure to include it on your resume. Being multilingual is a huge benefit, especially in a healthcare setting. Make sure you let prospective employers know if you can communicate with patients from different backgrounds who may not speak English.
